Commission Your Custom Altered Card – Céline Combes

An altered card is an official trading card transformed by hand by an artist — the illustration is extended, reinterpreted, or entirely reimagined, while remaining legal for tournament play.

🌿 Specialties

I don't reproduce what you imagine. I interpret it — and that's what makes the result surprising.

Every alter is entirely hand-painted. I work from your card, your universe, sometimes a few references you send me — and I bring my own eye to it. The result opens up the card's space and gives it new depth, while keeping it playable.

What works well : border extensions, landscapes, natural elements, cards where you already love the illustration and want to give it a new dimension.

I work primarily on Magic : The Gathering cards, and occasionally on Pokémon and Lorcana on request.

🚫 What I don't do

Human or animal portraits, fan art of recognizable characters, gore or erotic content, copies of other alterers' work.

Types of offers

Before and after painting of a Snow-Covered Forest card, showing the transformation from a green border with snowy landscape to a detailed winter scene with trees and a sunset sky.

MTG Full art (Landscape only)
from €160 to €260

I completely repaint your card with a hand-painted landscape, while retaining the original title. Each card is unique, playable, and of collector's quality.

I specialize in basic lands, command towers, dual lands, and Shock lands. My landscapes draw inspiration from real-world locations, the natural world I observe, and my own personal artistic vision—each composition is sketched directly onto the card, then built up in multiple layers of paint to create depth and atmosphere.

A comparison of a Magic: The Gathering card before and after being painted, showing a forest scene with a path and trees.

MTG Full Art Extension
from €160 to €260

I extend the original illustration to the sides and bottom of your card, while carefully preserving or repainting the title banner for readability and visual harmony. Each extension is hand-painted, unique, and suited for play or collecting. The alteration can be made on a single card or a playset.

MTG Borderless Extension – Three options

All three options keep the game rules fully visible. What changes is how much space is given to the illustration. The further you go in the options, the more the card opens up to the image.

Before and after images of a Magic: The Gathering card called Flooded Strand, showing the transformation from one painted version to a different painted version.

🟢Option 1 — Signature (85–125€)

The option that preserves the most text elements. The title, type banners and rules remain visible. Elements on cards printed before 2003 are redrawn by hand to integrate harmoniously.

    • Illustration extended to the edges

    • Title and type banners preserved

    • Redrawn by hand for cards printed before 2003

    • 85€ for cards after 2003 / 125€ for cards before 2003

Comparison of a Magic: The Gathering card called Flooded Strand before and after being painted, with the painted version showing a more vibrant landscape background.

🔵 Option 2 — Masterpiece (from 125€)

The balance between extended illustration and readability. The title is preserved, the type banner removed. The image gains presence without losing the card's identity.

    • Illustration extended to the sides and bottom of the card

    • Title preserved or carefully repainted

    • Type banner removed

    • Set symbol removed (optional)

Comparison of two Magic: The Gathering cards, both titled Flooded Strand, showing a painted transformation from the original card to a digitally altered version. The original card appears more detailed with a classic border, while the transformed version has a modern, minimalist border.

🟣 Option 3 — Legendary (from 145€)

The option that gives maximum space to the illustration. Title and banners removed, rules box reduced, bottom of card fully illustrated. The card becomes above all a work of art.

    • Illustration extended to all edges

    • Title and type banners removed

    • Set symbol removed (optional)

    • Rules box reduced (citations and spacing removed)

    • Bottom of card fully illustrated

Pokémon / Lorcana (on request)

These commissions are rare and accepted on a case-by-case basis, depending on availability and affinity with the project.

Comparison of a Pokémon card featuring Squirtle before and after being painted with watercolor, showing the artistic transformation.

🟢Pokémon - between €160 and €260

I extend the illustration across the full surface of the card to recreate the creature's environment. Each card is hand-painted, unique, and of collector quality.

Two cards featuring Simba from The Lion King, one card's front showing Simba standing on a riverbank with birds flying above and trees in the background, and the other card's back displaying an illustration of flying birds.

🔵 Lorcana - between €160 and €260

I keep the key elements visible and integrate the illustration harmoniously across the card. Same approach as the Full Art Extension, adapted to Lorcana's visual specificities.

Storyworld — On Request (new backdrop painted around an existing character / creature)

Sometimes, a card's character carries something beyond the original scene — a mood, a gesture, an energy that calls for an entirely new world.

In a Storyworld commission, the existing character stays, but their environment is completely reimagined and hand-painted from scratch. This is not an art replacement — it's a new scene built around who they already are.

Each project is unique. The amount of work depends on the card — sometimes the character is small and the entire world needs to be invented around them. Pricing is discussed individually after reviewing your project.

This type of commission is rare and accepted only when the card genuinely inspires me. Send me a message to find out if your card could become a Storyworld.

✨ Optional Enhancements for your Card

Elevate your card with subtle artistic details.

You may choose to add refined embellishments to give your card an elevated and distinctive finish. These options are optional and available depending on the card and overall composition.

Each enhancement is thoughtfully integrated into the artwork to preserve balance and harmony. Availability & pricing depend on complexity and will be discussed individually after reviewing your project.

🏅Gold or Silver Leaf Designs (Rare Specialty)

A delicate, premium finish for selected designs.

✨ Carefully integrated gold or silver leaf elements, designed as part of the composition — never applied superficially.
✨ Protected with a professional varnish layer.
✨ For highly detailed areas, premium metallic paints may be used to recreate a luminous effect.
