From €1200 to Timeless: The Story of a Library of Alexandria / De 1200€ à intemporelle : l’histoire d’une Library of Alexandria
When a Card Is Already Rare
Some cards are rare.
Some cards are expensive.
Some cards carry history.
Library of Alexandria – Arabian Nights (1993/1994) belongs to all three categories.
Before arriving in my studio, this particular copy was valued at approximately €1200. It was entrusted to me by a private European collector and competitive player based in Monaco.
This was not a casual commission.
It was a considered decision involving trust, patience, and artistic intention.
Shipping a High-Value Card
When collectors hesitate, logistics are often the true concern.
Shipping a historically valuable card requires structure and clarity.
For commissions within Europe, secure parcel services with ad valorem insurance may be used when appropriate — particularly for high-value pieces.
For international commissions, shipping methods are discussed individually to ensure the most reliable and suitable option available for the destination.
Each project is evaluated according to its value, context, and location.
Professional handling is never improvised.
Respecting Arabian Nights
The artistic challenge was not to transform the card beyond recognition.
It was to expand it without betraying it.
Arabian Nights carries a distinct atmosphere — warmth, mysticism, ancient architecture, a distant sense of knowledge.
The collector did not seek spectacle.
He sought depth.
I designed a borderless extension inspired by the lush gardens of the Taj Mahal — water features, architectural rhythm, subtle vegetation — while preserving the soul of the original illustration.
The goal was not to rewrite 1994.
It was to open it.
From Printed Object to Singular Artwork
Extending a card is not about filling borders.
It is about continuity.
Light direction must remain coherent.
Color harmony must align.
Atmosphere must feel uninterrupted.
Acrylic layers were applied with precision.
Edges were integrated seamlessly.
The frame dissolved into landscape.
The result was not louder.
It was deeper.
This is what distinguishes fine art miniature extension from decorative alteration.
The Collector’s Words
Upon receiving the card, the collector wrote:
“The card is superb, which is how it should have been printed in 1994.
I think the atmosphere of the card and the ARN set are very well respected, while adding another dimension with the gardens and the water feature…”
The emphasis was clear:
Respect.
Atmosphere.
Dimension.
Not loss.
Enhancement.
From Rare to Singular
Before: a rare printed card worth €1200.
After: a one-of-a-kind, hand-painted miniature artwork built upon a rare collectible.
It did not become less rare.
It became singular.
For serious collectors, singularity carries a different kind of permanence.
Many collectors wonder whether altered cards lose financial value.
I explore this question in depth in this dedicated article on altered card value.
Trust Is the True Medium
Paint is not the only material involved in a commission.
Trust is.
Trust in the process.
Trust in artistic restraint.
Trust in structured communication.
Trust in professional handling.
Iconic cards require discipline.
The objective is never ego.
It is elevation.
